I am a big fan of studio Ghibli since I was a child and my feeling for Ghibli will never change. When we talk how great Ghibli’s movies are, we can hardly discuss without Hayao Miyazaki who is one of the greatest animation directors. Therefore, I want everyone to know what kind of person he is and when he started to create such great movies. After reading, you will like Ghibli more for sure!!
About Hayao Miyazaki
Hayao Miyazaki was born in Tokyo in 1941. His father was running the business, Miyazaki Airplane, where manufactured rudders for fighter planes. You might’ve known he is a military OTAKU (maniac) because you can see many types of airplanes in his movies. However he said in an interview he is against any war. When he was a junior high school student, he aspired to become a manga artist. However he discovered he could not draw people instead he only drew planes, tanks, and battleships for several years. Miyazaki was influenced by several manga artists, such as Osamu Tezuka. And when he was a high school student, he “fell in love” with the movie’s heroine and it left a strong impression on him.
He started his career in 1963 as an animator at the studio, Toei Douga studio and was subsequently involved in many early classics of Japanese animations. From the beginning he commanded attention with his incredible drawing ability and the seemingly endless stream of movie ideas he proposed.
Hayao Miyazaki Films
In 1978, he directed his first TV series “Mirai shonen Konan (Future Boy Conan)” and in 1979, his first movie “The classic Rupan sansei: Kariosutoro no shiro (Lupin the Third: The Castle of Cagliostro)”. After a few years, he released “Kaze no tani no Naushika (Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind)”. In 1985, Miyazaki, Takahata, Tokuma and Suzuki founded the animation production company ‘Studio Ghibli’. The success of films led to the establishment of it. In particular, Princess Mononoke (1997) received the Japanese equivalent of the Academy Award for Best Film and was the highest-grossing domestic film in Japan’s history at the time of its release.
In an interesting twist, he announced his retirement five or six times during the release of eighteen movies until now, because he thinks the newest movie should always be his best ever. In September 2013, he announced his “SERIOUS and LAST” retirement. However…..he withdrew his retirement!! Now, he is creating a new movie! (It’s a good thing isn’t it?)
The movie will be released in 2019. I cannot wait for the day I will watch his great work again. If you have not watched his movies, I will strongly recommend you to watch them.
